Newark basketball teams sweep OCC-Capital honors

Newark sweeps OCC-Capital honors

Newark’s boys and girls basketball teams recently swept the top honors for the Ohio Capital Conference-Capital Division.

Both teams finished 10-0 in league play. Senior B.J. Duling and sophomore Katie Shumate each were named Player of the Year, and Jeff Quackenbush and J.R. Shumate were recognized as the top coaches.

Joining Duling on the boys first team was junior teammate J.T. Shumate. Seniors Kobe Long-Weber and Justin Carter were named to the second team, senior Hunter Dennison to the special mention list and senior Jakim Murphy to the honorable mention list.

Joining Shumate on the girls first team were sophomore teammate Morgan Sharps and senior Olivia Fox. Senior Emily Paul and freshman Gabby Stare were named to the second team and senior Carlee Street to the honorable mention list.

Fox and senior Jed Quackenbush were each team’s scholar athlete honoree.
