Host Newark (23-0) opened its Division I state title quest with a romp over winless Franklin Heights (0-23) Saturday in a first-round Division I district tournament game. The Wildcats, newly crowned AP poll champs in Division I, got 19 points, including five treys from Morgan Sharps, 18 from Katie Shumate and 12 from Gabby Stare. Shumate had 11 rebounds, Stare had six steals and five assists and Emily Paul also had five assists.
Williams led Franklin Heights with five points.
Newark will host Hamilton Township at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a district quarterfinal game.
