How short was President Donald Trump's speech?

President Donald Trump gives a thumbs up after his inauguration on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

President Donald Trump's brief 15-minute inaugural address was more concise than most swearing-in speeches throughout history, but far from the shortest.

The president spoke just 1,433 words in front of the U.S. Capitol building Friday afternoon, according to the American Presidency Project, a non-profit that archives presidential documents. You can read the entire address here.

Trump's speech was more than 10 times longer than the shortest-ever address by our first president, George Washington. On March 4, 1793, Washington's second inaugural address in Philadelphia was just 135 words. Washington's first speech fell just two words short of Trump's address.

From Washington to Trump: Inauguration firsts

The next shortest address was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's fourth and final inaugural speech — 559 words — on Jan. 20, 1945, the American Presidency Project found. President Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address on March 4, 1865 — a little more than a month before he was assassinated — stands as the third shortest address at just 700 words.

The longest ever address was President William Henry Harrison's 8,445-word speech on March 4, 1841. He died about a month later from pneumonia, believed to be brought on by exposure on the cool inauguration day.

For reference, former President Barack Obama's two inauguration speeches were 2,096 and 2,395 words respectively.
