Marion County to feel winter's bite

MARION - A winter storm pushing across the nation is expected to bring snow to Marion County and surrounding areas, followed by teeth-chattering cold temperatures.

Dubbed Winter Storm Caly by forecasters at the Weather Channel, the storm system originated in the Pacific Northwest and has dumped snow across the Rockies, northern Plains and upper Midwest on its way east. The system is expected to affect Ohio on Sunday and leave its mark on the state for the rest of the week.

"It's a complicated storm system," 10TV News chief meteorologist Chris Bradley said in his "Weather Geek Live" Facebook broadcast. "It's going to be messy. Unfortunately, some of these early snows are that way where it's snow, turning to rain and sleet, back to snow."

Bradley said a low-pressure system moving in from the Mississippi River valley at Missouri could result in less snow for parts of Ohio than what the storm produced in the western states.

"It's coming across Missouri and it'll move up to just about Chicago, maybe South Bend, Indiana, and then up to Port Huron, Michigan, just north of Detroit," Bradley said. "That's going to bring that warm air in. I'm calling for temperatures in the 40s on Monday. (Marion County) could be in the 30s, but well above freezing."

A blast of wintry weather is expected to leave its mark on Ohio this week. The winter storm system that started in the Pacific Northwest has swept across the northern half of the nation and is expected to push on to the northeastern states.

The National Weather Service forecast for Marion County is calling for an inch of snow during the day Sunday with another one to two inches possible Sunday night. A mix of rain and snow is predicted for the overnight hours into early Monday.

While the weather service is predicting a high of 32 degrees on Sunday in Marion, Bradley said temperatures could reach the upper 30s due to the low pressure system. The low Sunday night is predicted to be around 30.

After the mix of snow and rain early Monday, precipitation will change over to rain as the temperature warms into the mid to upper 30s for the afternoon. Low temperatures Monday night are projected to be in the lower 20s.

The next bout of snow, according to the weather service, will come Tuesday night and Wednesday. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

"I think we could get a couple of inches out of that next system," Bradley said. "It's going to be more of a player."

Tuesday's high should be around the freezing mark, with the low dipping to 20 degrees. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid-20s with lows dipping into single digits.

Thursday is predicted to be the coldest day of the week, according to NWS, with highs reaching the teens and the low plummeting to 6 degrees.
