NEWARK - Duncan Unternaher, a 2012 Newark High School graduate and student at the University of Akron, died Monday after suffering a severe laceration Saturday morning during an argument about fast food, according to police.

The Akron Police Department reported Unternaher, 23, was stabbed in the chest at 12:30 a.m. Saturday in his off-campus Akron apartment, 455 Grant St., Apt. 302, and taken to Summa Akron City Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Summit County Medical Examiner said Unternaher died Monday evening.

Friends of Unternaher began posting memories and expressing sadness on social media Sunday.

Kendall C. Scheid, 22, a fraternity brother of Unternaher who lives at the same apartment, was arrested and charged with felonious assault, according to the police report. Scheid is suspected of using alcohol and is a "known alcohol user," according to the report.

Scheid appeared Monday in Akron Municipal Court for an initial arraignment on the felonious assault charge, Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said. Scheid is scheduled to appear again in court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Unternaher and Scheid had been drinking together and stopped to get fast food, Edwards said. An argument developed over the food, and Unternaher was stabbed, officials said, adding that Devin Rogala, a third roommate, called 911 after the attack.

The residence is in Envision Apartments, an off-campus student housing complex just south of the campus, Edwards said.

The University of Akron's chief communications and marketing officer, Associate Vice President Wayne Hill, released the following statement:

"The University of Akron community is deeply saddened by this tragedy," the statement said. "University officials, including UA President Matthew Wilson, have been with his family and friends since the incident became known. UA has offered its full support to the family and to his fellow students. Grief counselors are being made available to those who find themselves in need of those services.”
