OAK HARBOR - An Ottawa County sheriff’s deputy demoted for an incident with a police officer last summer was recently charged with disorderly conduct due to a separate alleged incident with another officer last month.

Sheriff's deputy demoted after allegedly threatening another officer

Deputy Jayson Hale was charged last week with disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor, and is accused of saying profanities toward an officer with the Oak Harbor Police Department.

According to a report from Oak Harbor officer Eric Parker, Hale and his wife entered the Sunoco Friendship store late on Oct. 28, where Parker was on duty near its closing time.

Parker said in his report that while he was standing by the coffee counter with an officer from the Carroll Township Police Department, Hale allegedly said: “F--- you, Parker.”

Parker ignored it, according to his report, but Hale allegedly said the same thing again.

Parker said he continued to ignore the comments as Hale allegedly got closer and twice made an obscene comment.

When Hale approached even closer, Parker reportedly asked Hale to get away as he could smell alcohol coming from Hale’s breath and did not wish to speak with him after the way he treated a Carroll Township police officer in the prior incident.

Parker said in the report that Hale was being disorderly in public and Parker did not want to speak with him out of respect for the customers inside the store at the time.

Hale reportedly then walked away, but his wife, Christy Hale, allegedly continued to yell and harass Parker.

When Hale and his wife exited the store, according to the report, Hale allegedly yelled “coward” as he walked out the door.

Parker referred the case to Ottawa County Prosecutor Mark Mulligan for review and later filed disorderly conduct charges against both Hale and his wife.

Hale was previously suspended for three days without pay for an incident in June and, after a recent promotion to detective, was demoted back to patrol deputy for violating policy and procedures of the sheriff’s office.

He was accused of threatening a police officer from Carroll Township during a domestic call to his home.

According to personnel records, Hale has been disciplined by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, where he has worked as a road patrol deputy since 2006, on at least five other occasions.
