LUCAS - A fire on Lucas-Perrysville Road Sunday morning remains under investigation.

Monroe Township-Lucas Fire Chief Chris Niswander said the department received a call at 9:24 a.m. about a residential structure fire.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, there was a fire on the first floor of the two-story house.

The fire originated in the building's northeast corner, which was the house's kitchen.

Niswander said the homeowner, who had already left for work and was not home at the time, kept ammunition and other reloading supplies in the house, causing popping and cracking sounds.

Firefighters from Monroe Township-Lucas, Perrysville, Mifflin Township (Richland) and Mifflin Township (Ashland) worked to extinguish the fire from the outside at first, then worked on the inside for a limited time.

The fire was under control by 10:25 a.m.

Niswander said the building was not a complete loss because the exterior walls and roof are still in good shape, but he said there was heavy smoke and fire damage inside, and many of the house's contents were lost.

The homeowner lives alone, but one dog was lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
