Millersport Sweet Corn Festival returns for 70th year

MILLERSPORT - The 70th annual Millersport Sweet Corn Festival will be Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 at the Sweet Corn Festival grounds in Millersport.

On Wednesday, the Grand Parade leaves Millersport High School at 6 p.m. with marching bands and Sweet Corn Sweetheart candidates from 18 area high schools participating. The grand marshals for this year’s parade are Steve and Rita Mohler.

The queen competition will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Lee Greenwood will entertain on the main stage at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Lonestar will be the entertainment on the main stage Saturday evening beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The festival opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and at 11 a.m. Saturday with food and entertainment for people of all ages. For more information on the various concerts and competitions, go to www.sweetcornfest.com.

Community Prayer Walk

A Community Prayer Walk will begin at 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Millersport United Methodist Church, 2310 Refugee St. in Millersport. The Prayer Walk will honor the men and women of the Millersport Police Department, the Millersport Fire Department, and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office for the work they do.

The walk will begin with the first prayer at the Millersport United Methodist Church, then proceed to the Millersport Police Station, where another prayer will be given and participants will have the opportunity to sign their names and wish the men and women their best. The walk will then proceed to the Veterans’ Memorial Site for more prayers and presentation of the flags.

Each minister who attends will have a chance to pray and say a few words at each stop. All are encouraged to come out and show how much they care about the officers and firefighters.

Tuesday’s Table

Thornville’s Grace Lutheran Church will offer Tuesday’s Table on Tuesday at the VFW on North Bank Road. The group will then have dessert at the Dairy Dock on Walnut Road in Buckeye Lake.

The local businesses who have had a decline in business the past couple of years with the lowering of the water level in Buckeye Lake appreciate the support of the surrounding communities.

Senior Citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met Aug. 19 in the Lions Clubhouse, 2839 Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport, with 28 members and one guest in attendance.

Several shut-ins were remembered. Door Prizes were won by Ginny Swick, Joan Wenzel, Linda King, Tera Eckman, Carolyn Ricketts, Judy Harris, Marge Sperry, Marvin Penwell, Barb Clark and Gina Cooper.

There will be no meeting Sept. 2 because of the Sweet Corn Festival. The next meeting will be at noon Sept. 16 with the club providing spaghetti for the main entree for the potluck lunch.

Village Council

The Millersport Village Council met Aug. 9.

Fire Chief Robert Price recommended that two vehicles be declared surplus. The vehicles are a 1989 Ford Engine and a 1996 International Pumper. The department wants to purchase a 3,000-gallon tanker truck for Fairfield Beach. There are plans to upgrade the fire facility at Fairfield Beach.

The mayor and street commissioner compiled a list of properties that need maintenance. Pictures have been taken, and the village is attempting to enforce zoning and maintenance code violations.
