Musing | Tragedy strikes even peaceful neighborhoods

The tragedies that have been running rampant in recent weeks has hit home. Our family in the eastern panhandle experienced an incident in their neighborhood this week. Ryan, a former classmate and teammate of our grandson, Austin, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting.

According to police reports, the three young men in the car that fired the shots are all now in custody. But a once quiet and peaceful neighborhood is in shock. Jim and I met Ryan several years ago in Myrtle Beach where their team went every spring for training and participated in a big tournament there every year.

We were present when he and Austin graduated on the baseball field because they were playing in the state baseball tournament the same time as graduation six hours away.

I have just been sick with all the violence all over the world. It makes one wonder if we might indeed be seeing prophesy in the Bible come to fruition.

•• On another note, Concerts in the Oak continue tonight with the community band from Bellefontaine as guest performers. Attendance and weather has been pretty favorable for the series this summer.

• I have watched a family of ducklings grow the past month or so. They apparently are old enough for mother to teach them to fly. They follow her up the hill behind our condo and she sends them one by one to try their wings.

Some get 2 to 3 feet before falling to the ground and others just can’t get off the ground. Guess I live a pretty biting life to find watching them to be fascinating. I guess it is just like us teaching our children to walk.

Let me leave you with this quotation by an unknown author: “Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going.”

Until next week.
