Rain the biggest winner at Fuller’s tourney

Staff report

ZANESVILLE — Rain has been a rare occurence in recent weeks, but somehow it made its way to east central Ohio on Thursday.

It had a big impact on the annual Fuller’s Fairways Junior Tournament, which was limited to only nine holes.

Makyla Lewellen and Derek Graham made the most of their limited opportunities, however.

Maysville’s Lewellen posted a 1-under-par 34 to earn first place in the 16-18-year-old division, which combined boys and girls and played white and red tees.

Graham, from John Glenn, took home the 14-15 division with a 40.

It was Lewellen’s lowest tournament score of the summer, topping Philo’s Liam Blake (36) by two shots and Tri-Valley’s Dalton Crowley (37) by three.

She recently placed second at the 9 Stars Junior Classic, played at EagleSticks and The Virtues.

Philo’s Logan Jarrett was fourth in the 16-18 division with 37, followed by Zanesville’s Jace Ruggerio (38), Nolan Kimberly (40) and Sam Straker (41).

Other local players in action included John Glenn’s Bryce Smith (43) and Carson Bennett (44), Zanesville’s Joslyn Goins (44) and Philo’s Evan Smith (51).

Zanesville’s Jewel Goins followed Graham in the 14-15 division with 43; Sheridan’s Duke Foder was third, Crooksville’s Broc White fourth (46) and Sheridan’s Aaron Dixon fifth (48).

West Muskingum’s Seth Brandfass (49), John Glenn’s Brady Graham (52) and Philo’s Parker Omen (60) rounded out the local contingent.
