Librarians challenge residents to trivia

LANCASTER - Are you smarter than a librarian?

The librarians at the Fairfield County District library are testing their knowledge base by challenging community members to a battle of wits during a new Lancaster Festival trivia event this week.

Stump the Librarian is a Jeopardy-style trivia game, complete with a question board and buzzers, covering a range of topics from geography and music to animals and the television show "Downton Abbey." Each round will last about 25 minutes, and they will begin at 1:30 and 2 p.m. every day at the bandstand through Friday.

Tuesday's challenge involves one round of food/cuisine questions, followed by a round of literature.

Mark Bohach, of WLOH, competed on Monday in the movie round — showing a particular strength in the "Star Wars" category — but still lost to the librarians. The game has proven to be quite competitive so far, with Bohach playfully challenging some of the questions.

"(Bohach) thought it would be fun to see if he could beat us," said library director Marilyn Steiner, who is moderating the game.

Bohach will have a second chance Thursday when he returns for the American history trivia portion.

The inspiration for Stump the Librarian came after realizing how popular game shows have become on TV, and from the librarians' wide range of knowledge.

"We're always answering questions," Steiner said.

On Monday, the librarians were stumped by one man, who participated from the audience and was well versed in the fictional world of Harry Potter.

"He smoked us," said one of the librarians who competed.

Each round winner can come back at 2 p.m. Friday for the Know-It-All Trivia Championship.

So far, Bohach was the only community member to register early for the new festival event. Steiner said she is hoping for more audience participation. There are still many open spots to fill this week and people who are interested are invited to attend or participate.
