LOUDONVILLE - The edge of one side of the beloved covered bridge at Mohican State Park is missing a few shingles this week, but the state plans to soon rebuild.

The historic structure was damaged about a week and a half ago, said Matt Eiselstein, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The damage was superficial only, and not structural.

"It was when the water was really high," Eiselstein said. "One of the trees on the bank gave way and slid into it."

The crew that noticed the tree the next morning quickly cut the leaning tree with a pole saw, relieving pressure from the side of the bridge.

Eiselstein said the walking path along the side of the bridge hit by the tree is temporarily closed.

"You can cross on the other side," Eiselstein said.

Eiselstein said the repair project will go out to bid next week, and should be completely fairly soon.
