Five injured in ambulance, car crash

Staff report

LANCASTER - Five people were injured in a Wednesday crash involving an ambulance and a Toyota Camry on Ohio 37 at Red Bud Lane, at the top of the hill overlooking Rising Park.

The crash was reported around 4:45 p.m. Police said the car came around the curve southbound, lost control and slid into the ambulance owned by Portsmouth Ambulance. Officer Matt Poffenbarder said the Toyota driver said he slid on the icy road, causing him to slam into the ambulance.

Three people were in the car and two medics were in the ambulance, Poffenbarder said. He said all were conscious when rescue workers arrived. Four of the victims were taken to Fairfield Medical Center and the fifth was expected to be flown to a Columbus hospital.

The names of the injured were not yet available.

Police blocked Granville Pike near the Fairfield County Fairgrounds while officials tended to the scene. The road also was blocked just past the crash site.
