Former high school could be apartment complex

Staff report

MARION - A former high school could become an apartment complex.

The Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission, in partnership with the WODA Group Inc., will submit a low-income housing tax credit application to the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, a news release states.

If successful, it would provide funding to renovate the former Marion Catholic High School site and convert it to 45 units of attractive, comfortable energy-efficient apartment homes for seniors.

There will be 11 two-bedroom apartments and 34 one-bedroom apartments. The development will feature a community room along with a space dedicated to supportive services. The development will also include the construction of an additional building attached to the rear of the existing facility that will house the 11 two-bedroom units.

The proposed area of development will not include the Boler Center or the athletic field.

A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Prospect Room of the Marion County Building, 222 W. Center St., Marion. All those interested are encouraged to attend.

At present Apex Church is using the former school for its ministry. The building at 1001 Mount Vernon Ave. is 40,000 square feet.

Marion Catholic closed in 2013.
