Oak Harbor wins sectional crown while Ross is runner-up

Trayvion Scott (113 pounds), Tyler Grine (138) and Jordan Weissinger (152) earned sectional crowns Saturday as Fremont Ross’s wrestling team finished second at the Division I sectional tournament at Mansfield Senior.

The top four at each weight advance to districts.

Lamonte Chapman (106) and Rico Puente (126) were second while Bryce Moreno (195) was third for the Little Giants. Ethan Hetrick (132), Garrett Barth (145), Stefan Johnson (170) and Kieler Foster (182) were fourth while Ivan Franks (160) was fifth.

Division II at Oak Harbor

Brandon Garber (220) captured a sectional title as the third seed as Oak Harbor finished second.

“He wrestled well throughout the day and (Friday) also,” Rockets coach George Bergman said. “Garber chose bottom (in the championship match) in the final period and got out. Brandon did well with the tie-ups and the other guy got desperate. He brawled well in the semifinals and finals.”

Dylan Mansor (120), Jeremy Balboa (138) and Rhett Petersen (145) were runners-up while Trevor Scherf (132), Ben Petersen (152) and Brody Hennig (160) were third for the Rockets. Nick Bergman (126), Kian Thompson (170) and Stephen Simkus (182) were fourth.

Division II at Sandusky

Clyde’s Garit Witt (220) earned a sectional crown.

Bellevue’s Treston Francis (113), Luke Leonard (132), Collin Adkins (138), Chris Harris (145), Logan Vannest (195), Jared Hoy (220) and Grant Moyer (285) were second for Bellevue. Harris notched the 100th victory of his career in his first match Friday.

The Fliers’ Austin Baker (160) was second, Grant Coleman (120) third, Ryan Kelley (182) fourth and Collin Mange (285) fifth. The Redmen’s Jameson Kilgore (126) was third while Gabe Smythe (160) and Nick Smythe (170) were fifth.

Bellevue was second and Clyde tied for sixth.

Division III at Lake

Madison Jaso (195) took a sectional title as Gibsonburg finished fourth. Damien Schmeltz (138) and Antonio Vasquez (145) were second while Dan Henline (182) was third.

Hugo Villerreal (132), Griffin Geary (152), Troy Ickes (170) and Alex Lejeune (285) were fourth for the Golden Bears.

Thomas Schnitker (113) earned a sectional crown as Woodmore finished sixth. Conor Emch (126) was second while Tyler Sandwisch (106) and Sean Small (132) were third.

Seth Gaghen (160) and Rito Alvear (285) were fifth for the Wildcats.

Jordan Jaso (152) was second and Brenden Biddle (126) fifth as Lakota finished 10th.

Division III at Carey

Nate Vasquez (106) earned a sectional crown as St. Joseph Central Catholic finished ninth. Bobby Mancha (220) was second, Johnny Moreno (195) fourth and Dylan Filliater (113) fifth.

Division III at Plymouth

Margaretta’s Deven Taylor (152) and Caleb Stockmaster (160) earned sectional championships. Stockmaster hasn’t lost in 42 matches this season.

“We wrestled well throughout the weekend,” Polar Bears coach Keith Taylor said. “We fell short a few matches in the finals, but we are right where we need to be as a team.

“We came a long way the past three weeks as a team and we look to continue to improve this next week for the final push toward state. The kids wrestled hard and pushed themselves -- we just have to continue that into next week.”

John Harris (106), Ryan Green (170) and Drake Reed (195) were second while Jacob Huber (220) and Ed Huber (285) were fourth as the Polar Bears finished third.
