Port Clinton’s Lowe set to play football at Tiffin

Port Clinton football coach Beau Carmon told Keegan Lowe he will always be a Findlay Oiler, but Carmon will now support the green and gold. That’s because Lowe is headed to Tiffin University to play linebacker.

“I’ll probably do a little trash talking to Coach,” Lowe said.

Carmon said the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is the toughest Division II league in the nation.

“It’s a great situation,” Carmon said. “He’ll have an impact. He’s fearless and he plays through pain. He plays with a passion for the game. It’s not just on Fridays. There were times we had to tone him down – his intensity.

“He honestly practiced as hard as he played. He’s very tough. He was a captain as a senior. Physically, he’s on his way to being ready to contribute early.”

Lowe earned the Redskins’ Devin Kohlman Courage Award.

“He was the linchpin,” Port Clinton assistant Phil Fought said. “We could design our defense because we had him in the middle at Mike linebacker. He gives you everything. A lot of the things we were able to do were because of him.

“Look at the strides we made defensively. Being with the different staffs, we never had a true middle linebacker. He set the bar. The other team knew they had to account for Keegan. He’s the model we’ll compare everybody else to. He played linebacker better than anybody I’ve had.”

Lowe played outside as a sophomore and defensive end as a junior. He matured and made the calls for the defense as a senior.

“My responsibilities were to be the leader and keep the guys focused,” he said. “Help them realize the game plan and make plays to get the spark going. I understood the game more and where I need to be.

“It’s so awesome to say my career is going to continue. So many people have supported me and it’s what I’ve wanted since I was little.”

Lowe also considered Mount Union.

“Tiffin is a little closer to home,” he said. “I want to get into education and they can get me in the classroom quicker. I’m going to know the playbook so I know what they want to get done as a team.

“I’ll get bigger, stronger and faster so I can hopefully earn a starting spot to help the team.”

The Redskins played in Week 11 last season.

“We beat Genoa and we were the first Port Clinton team to make the playoffs,” Lowe said. “It’s an amazing feeling. That’s what we wanted to do since the sixth grade. I can’t wait to come back and watch the varsity keep improving.”
