MARION – Police believe an 80-year-old driver was not paying attention when he backed into a school bus, causing one girl to be taken to the hospital.

Officials with the Marion Police Department said the driver was backing out of his driveway in the 600 block of North Greenwood Street when his 2007 Honda Fit struck the back of a Marion City Schools bus around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Lt. Mark Beaschler said one student was "shook up" following the crash, complaining of pain but had no visible injury.

Marion City Fire Assistant Chief Rob Cowell said the girl was taken to Marion General Hospital as a precautionary measure.

In a news release, Police Chief Bill Collins said there was "moderate damage" to the Honda and "very minor damage" to the school bus. Neither drivers nor the other 34 students on the bus were injured.

Collins said the crash is not believed to be weather related, although freezing rain was falling at the time of the crash.
