Life is all in one’s perspective

Laura Stinchcomb

Wherever I have gone this past week, be it the doctor’s office or the grocery store, it seems all I hear are people complaining about the weather. Mother Nature, just like a woman, changes her mind and does the unexpected no matter what time of year.

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but don’t we all expect winter in Ohio? I find the gift of living on the shores of Lake Erie throughout the seasons just beautiful. I reflect on my childhood in a suburban neighborhood, and there was nothing special about it besides the sidewalks, curbs and street lights.

The snow has been beautiful, and the wind combined with the chill gives one a sense of coziness and warmth to our soul. We all enjoy Lake Erie with all its emotions of the different seasons.

Last winter brought in the tourists for the magnificent ice chunks and cubes arranged along our lakefront.

This winter I have spent inside due to surgery, but just to see the ice shanties with the fishermen lined up is intriguing to me. I have seen ice skaters, families walking, snowmobiles, I even read about the Burning of the Snowman and trips to our islands.

We can all look for the negative in anything — in the weather, in people, in life. We need to realize there is goodness and beauty in everything.

I am often at a fault, my friends remind me, for only trying to see the best in people and things. It hasn’t gotten me very far ahead. But, why look for the negative?

We have the privilege of the lake and all it can offer us year round. Our sunsets are some of the most beautiful. Need I not forget the perch and walleye we all enjoy catching and eating? Just watching the lighthouse has a simplicity of beauty all its own.

Life is all in one’s perspective and attitude.

Marilyn Monroe’s famous quote: “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
