HOLMES TOWNSHIP – It was a weekend to remember in New Washington.

The Buckeye Central Bucks beat Ohio 602 rival Colonel Crawford by 19 points on Friday and took home a Saturday night, 20-point win against Wynford. The 69-49 finish was not something Buckeye Central coach Phil Loy was expecting, but he will take it.

“First of all, if you told me we were going to beat Crawford by 19 then Wynford by 20 at their place, I will take that weekend anytime,” coach Loy said. “The kids played well and it was a great team effort all weekend long.”

The Bucks jumped out to a quick lead on Saturday, much like they did on Friday. They held an 18-4 lead after one but were outscored in the second. The Royals would just not go away, as they would never trail by more than 12 until the fourth quarter.

It was at the beginning of the fourth where the Bucks finally put the game away with a 10-0 run to push their lead to 60-36 before the Royals could get back on the board.

“The just hung around down eight, 10 or 12 and when they have scorers like Tea and Crall on the perimeter, that can go away pretty quick,” coach Loy said. “I thought we defended pretty well in that run. I thought we did a good job of moving the ball on offense.”

Buckeye Central's Jacob Shade attempts to score against Wynford on Saturday evening.

The Bucks got their normal efforts from senior Grant Loy and junior Jacob Shade. Loy finished his evening with 22 points and 12 rebounds while, Shade delivered 19 points and six boards.

But it was the role players who starred on Saturday. Warren Wechter and Tyler Trapp took advantage of a defense that did not focus too much on them. Trapp chipped in with nine points, while Wechter scored eight. Trapp was 5 of 6 from the line and Wechter was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field.

“Hats off to Warren (Wechter). Hopefully this was a coming out party for him this weekend and got us some extra scoring,” coach Loy said. “If teams are going to help off, which they will, and Tyler (Trapp) and Warren can be slashers and get to the basket and shoot high percentage shots, we will take that all day long.”

It was a great weekend in New Washington, but Holmes Township is thankful it is over. The Royals saw their 7-game win streak snapped Friday by Upper Sandusky and took another tough loss courtesy of the Bucks.

Wynford's Alex Crall goes for a basket early in the first quarter against Buckeye Central.

Alex Crall stuffed the stat sheet Saturday with a game-high 27 points, including a trio of triples. But no other Royal scored more than five points in the contest.

“I’m not going to lie, this was painful,” Wynford coach Jason Engel said. “That was a tough loss. I have not seen us play like that in a long time and usually we battle through adversity and finish games strong. Luckily for us, this was not our last home game, because it was one of our worst losses this season.”

The Bucks dominated in every category. They out-rebounded the Royals 35-20, dished out 12 assists to Wynford’s seven and shot the ball better, 58 percent to 32 percent.

“I have to give credit to Buckeye because they shot a million layups and moved the ball well and attacked us,” Engel said. “You have to give them credit because they embarrassed us on our home floor.”

The Buckeye Central weekend has the Bucks rolling at the right time. They improve to 14-6 and 11-4 in the Northern 10 Conference. They will host Riverdale and travel to Mohawk next week for final tune-ups before they play Norwalk St. Paul in the sectional semifinals.

“We knew coming in it was going to be two tough games,” Grant Loy said. “But we also knew if we would play at our maximum ability we could get both and we did and played great. It was the best we played all season.”

Wynford guard Jack Reed looks for a way around the Buckeye Central defense Saturday evening.

The Royals drop to 12-8 and 9-6 in the N10 and will look to rebound against River Valley on Tuesday and Bucyrus on Friday before taking on Mansfield Christian in the sectional semifinals.

If the Bucks and Royals can win their first round games, they would set up another match between the two Crawford County schools in the sectional finals.
