Muskingum County Library System December events

ZANESVILLE - Various events will be held throughout the Muskingum County Library System in December. All libraries will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1. All libraries will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 31.

John McIntire Library

•The Columbus Children’s Theater will present “The Snow Queen” at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7. The story served as the basis for the animated film “Frozen.” Reservations are required.

•Dr. Laura and Dr. Joyce will present Sounds of the Season at 6 p.m. Dec. 8. Hear songs of the holiday season while learning facts about music and instruments. Children who attend the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra annual holiday concert Dec. 3 will receive a VIP pass for the program.

•“The Elves and the Shoemaker” by ArtReach of the Children’s Theater of Cincinnati will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14. This play is based on the Brothers Grimm tale of an elderly shoemaker who is helped by a pair of elves.

•Disney’s “Snow Buddies” will be shown at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 29.

•A buck-a-bag of book sale will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 by the Friends of the Muskingum County Library System. A members only sale will be 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4. Memberships to the Friends of the Library is $5 for a year. A lobby book sale will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 18.

•Throughout the month, children will be able to decorate ornaments from the Mid-East Career Techonology Center while supplies last. A coloring contest is also being held at all branch libraries with entries displayed through Dec. 16. Winners in preschool to kindergarten and first to fourth grade categories will be named Dec. 21 and received and oversized stuffed teddy bear. Coloring sheets are available at the library. Dresden Branch Library

•Children can visit with Santa Claus at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and decorate a cookie to take home.

•”A Secret Gift” by Ted Gup will be discussed at 4 p.m. Dec. 11 as part of the monthly adult book club. The book is inspired by the true story of a man who helped his Canton neighbors during the Depression era.

Children visiting the library throughout the month can make a snowflake to take home. For any library programs, call 740-754-1003.

Duncan Falls-Philo Branch Library

•A holiday celebration for children in fifth grade and under will be at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 11 featuring songs, crafts and a visit with Santa Claus.

• Holiday card stamping with Diann McCormick for adults will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 7.

•“Footsteps in the Snow” by Charles Lachman will be discussed for the adult book club at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 28. The story became one of the most infamous criminal cold cases in U.S. history.

New Concord Branch Library

•Children and teens can make a gingerbread bookmark through Dec. 5. Patrons can also enter to win a gingerbread house through Dec. 16. Gingerbread cookies can also be decorated Dec. 7 to 12.

• “The Language of Flowers” by Vanessa Diffenbaugh will be discusses as part of the adult book club at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9. The novel concerns Victoria Jones, a trouble woman who has a knack for helping others through flowers.

• “The Shoe Box” with storyteller Carmen Horn will be told at 6 p.m. Dec. 14.

•Christmas crafts for adults will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 7.

South Branch Library

•Ohio Nature Education will present a program on weather lore as fact and fiction and how wild animals deal with the changing seasons at 6:30 pm. Dec. 9.

•Children can meet Santa Claus, do a craft and hear stories at 6 p.m. Dec. 16.

•The Good Reads Book Club will cover “Promise Me” by Richard Paul Evans throughout December. Readers are asked to return a questionnaire after reading the holiday themed novel.
