One flown to hospital after ATV crash in Philo

Staff report

PHILO — A Philo man suffered a severe head laceration after being thrown from a four-wheeler he was driving Tuesday afternoon across the Philo Bridge, requiring an air-lift to Columbus.

The man, Steven Loony, 19, of Philo, was driving a four-wheeler on the sidewalk when he struck a handrail on the bridge. He was thrown forward off the four-wheeler about 20 feet, landing and hitting his head on a beam, said Jarrod Blake, assistant chief with the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Loony was air-lifted to the Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center in Columbus by MedFlight.

He was not wearing a helmet. Ohio State Highway Trooper Joshua Weaver said Loony was alert upon authorities' arrival and reported not losing consciousness. Loony's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

No other vehicles or people were involved in the incident, officials said.

Crews received the call for service at 12:18 p.m. and arrived at the scene two minutes later.

The Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department, the patrol and Genesis Community Ambulance responded in addition to Harrison Township and MedFlight.
