MARION — Fire on Saturday night left a Marion family of five temporarily homeless, according to authorities.

No one occupied the residence of Mark and Alyssa Lambert, 339 Edgewood Drive, when the fire was reported at 8:34 p.m. by a passerby, said Capt. Adam Fetter of the city fire department. No one was injured.

The fire department continues to investigate the fire, which began in a first-floor family room at the front of the two-story wood structure and spread up the stairwell to the second floor, Fetter said.

He said the fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to the structure of the house and $2,000 in damage to its contents. The house is insured. The value of the house is $54,460, according to the Marion County auditor's office.

Twelve firefighters responded to the scene, the first arriving at 8:37 p.m., with firefighters remaining at the house until 10:57 p.m.

The family had to seek temporary shelter due to the fire, said Bob Cunningham, disaster lead for the North Central Ohio chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross provides money to victims of fires based on the size of the household and its needs.

"They're going to need some major repairs to the home," Cunningham said, adding that he will check again with the family "to see what they might need and what resources we can direct them to, what additional resources."

He encouraged anyone who would like to help fire victims being assisted by the Red Cross to contact the chapter at 740-725-9141 during its operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
