Genoa’s Deiter to make first start for Wisconsin

News Herald staff report

GENOA — Wisconsin redshirt freshman Michael Deiter will make the first start of his career at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The Badgers, who are ranked 20th in the preseason, play No. 3 Alabama at 8 p.m.

Deiter, who is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 310 pounds, is Wisconsin’s new right guard. He joins two returning starters on the offensive line.

Deiter will block for senior quarterback Joel Stave and junior running back Corey Clement. Clement and Crimson Tide running back Derrick Henry are in the preseason Heisman discussion.

Clement rushed for 949 yards and nine touchdowns as Melvin Gordon’s backup last season. Clement and Gordon combined to rush for 3,536 yards to establish a single-season FBS record for teammates.

“I’m excited to block for Corey because he is going to be the next great running back at the University of Wisconsin,” Deiter said.

Deiter was first-team all-Ohio and Northwest District lineman of the year in Division IV as a senior for the Comets.
