CLYDE — A Clyde man arrested and charged for burglarizing a Nelson Street home also knocked on numerous neighborhood doors and later hid under a truck to avoid police.

David Hemmer, 31, was arrested Thursday afternoon in the Whirlpool parking lot after running from police. He was charged with burglary, trespassing and persistent disorderly conduct.

As he walked through the neighborhood, he was knocking doors and asking for a man named Cyle, police said. One Nelson Street family said Hemmer entered their home, but reported nothing was stolen.

When police asked Hemmer why he was under the truck, Hemmer said he was hiding from police because he thought officers were following him all day. He then threatened to assault an officer and attempted to pull his hand away. The police report said Hemmer was loud an belligerent after being taken into custody.

“Hemmer made threats that he was going to slam his head into the glass of the police vehicles,” the report said.

One resident, Kelley Scriver, said Hemmer came to her house and spoke with her daughter.

“She said as he was leaving that he was all messed up,” Scriver said. “She called me as soon as he left and she was scared.”

Scriver said the second time Hemmer came to her home, she saw him and said he was acting strange.

“He was very fidgety. Obviously on something,” Scriver said.

Hemmer also was involved in an early morning incident at the Speedway gas station on South Main Street. The report said Hemmer was harassing customers and threatened an employee when asked to leave. Police cleared Hemmer from the scene at 6:46 a.m. Thursday.

Another witness told police Hemmer appeared to be impaired and was acting strangely and asking for “Cyle” at 7:30 a.m.
