On the field, Fremont Ross senior Tyler Schell is a hard-hitting linebacker and leader of the Little Giant defense. Friday Schell and the Little Giants host Holland Springfield at 7 p.m. at Don Paul Stadium. Off the field, Schell stresses the student portion of student-athlete. He’s weighing options for his future in both football and classroom, but is willing to leaving football behind if he has to. One thing he’s not willing to leave behind: His seventh-grade underwear.

Q: Any game day superstition?

TS: I don’t know if this is too much information, I’ve worn the same pair of underwear since seventh-grade. Same pair of underwear every game. It’s a tight squeeze, but it’s part of my ritual. Every game since seventh-grade. But I don’t wear them unless its game day.

Q: You win an all-expenses-paid vacation anywhere in the world, where do you go?

TS: Definitely Europe. It’s hard to choose. I’m a history person. War and all that stuff is interesting to me. If you look overseas to Europe there is so much, from the Knights to the Romans, all that stuff is fascinating to me. I’d love to visit Rome, France, London, England. I’d love to see all that history stuff.

Q: What is your biggest fear?

TS: The ocean. Being in the ocean, alone, in the middle of the ocean, terrifies me. The ocean is so full of creatures that are so much bigger and more suitable for the environment than humans. It’s not my favorite place to be. I like the beach. Not so much the ocean.

Q: Do you collect anything?

TS: Star Wars memorabilia. I’m a huge Star Wars fan. When I was real little I remember getting my first Star Wars Lego set, it was this little rinky-dink thing. I have all the movies on Blu-Ray, I have sets of collectible figures. I’m a big Star Wars fan.

Q: What are your college plans?

It’s tough to choose because I love football, I would like to continue my career. I’ve visited a couple Ivy League (schools) and have stuff from them and I’m very interested in that. …But I’m a very academic person. If it’s a choice between a small school that’s not very academic to play football, or Ohio State or a big, academic powerhouse school, I would choose academics. I’m definitely going to college to be a smarter person, not a football player. That’s what I’m thinking about. I’ve been to Princeton, Harvard and Yale. Also Carnegie Mellon. …I know I’m not smart enough to go to Harvard without playing football, that’s why it’s great to have this avenue. I’m not necessarily the smartest person in the world but to be able to use football, a sport that I love, to get somewhere where I can further myself academically is a great opportunity for me.
