PORT CLINTON – Port Clinton’s service department will be moving to a bigger, newer garage this fall at the former Tri-D Industries facility on the southeast side.

On Tuesday night, the Port Clinton City Council adopted ordinances 13-15 and 15-15, authorizing Safety-Service Director Tracy Colston to enter into a contract to buy the 33 Park Drive location for the city’s service departments.

It’s a move that’s been needed for years, at-large Councilman Mike Snider said after the council’s regular meeting in chambers.

“They’ve been discussing it for decades,” Snider said.

In the past five years, the city has looked into renovating its current location on West Perry Street, but the cost was too high, he said. Officials also looked into building a new facility, but that also was cost-prohibitive.

In the past year or so, the price of the Tri-D Industries Inc. facility was lowered, and the city will buy it and the land as well as make changes and equip it for the service department for about $650,000.

The three required readings of the ordinances were waived in order for the city to lock in interest rates, which went up slightly since talks were held with Woodbridge Landing LLC and the city, Snider said.

If all goes according to plan, moving should take place around early November, after mowing season has ended but before snow starts to fall. It will be the perfect time for the department to move, he said.

“It’s a giant step forward for the city,” Snider said.
