Community celebrates Stars and Stripes

ZANESVILLE – Despite the Friday afternoon rain, area residents were out in full force during the annual Stars and Stripes on the River event, many of them to enjoy the bands performing.

Stars & Stripes on the River will culminate with a fireworks display on Saturday after two days of entertainment at Zane's Landing. The fireworks are scheduled for Saturday night and will be launched over the river from the Y bridge.

On Friday, families came to Zane's Landing to enjoy the music, rides and food.

"We've got our umbrella, we're good," said Jill Dale, who went to the event with her son, Tucker, to see the band DoubleCut, which performed on Friday.

She wanted to help support the local community — DoubleCut is originally from Zanesville — as well as hear some good music, she said. Dale and her son plan to return Saturday to watch the fireworks as well as listen to more bands scheduled to perform.

"There's something here for everyone," she said.

This was the first year that Nora Taylor and her family came to the event, though they have gone to watch fireworks every year.

Taylor said she and her husband brought their two children to watch DoubleCut, but there were many rides for their 3-year-old daughter to enjoy as well.

"We'll be back (Saturday) night," Taylor said.

Ray Scott also was scheduled to perform Friday, and a number of bands are slated to play Saturday afternoon. Live music will continue after the fireworks show.

"It gives them something to do," Erin Bryan said about the event.

Bryan attended the event with her 2-year-old son, Hunter Patton, and said she thought many of the games and rides were good for families with young children.

"It's different," she said.

Lisa Clark, of Zanesville, went to watch DoubleCut with her mother and husband, as they are friends with the members of the band. Clark said it's good to attend these kinds of annual events because they help bring the city together.

"It goes back to supporting your local community," she said. "People are pretty close around here."
