Former city mayor honored with the ‘Sky Wharton Way’

Staff report

COSHOCTON – On Aug. 17, a two-block stretch of Water Street, from Main to Mulberry Street, will become Sky Wharton Way in honor of former mayor, coach and teacher Schuyler “Sky” Wharton.

City Council approved that honorary designation Monday night in preparation for Coshocton City Schools’ Meet the Team Night, set for Aug. 17 at Stewart Field, the home of the Coshocton High School Redskins. The school district and the Coshocton United Athletic Boosters plan to unveil the signs that night on the street leading up to the field.

Wharton is the school’s “winningest” football coach ever. He died in 1996 at the age of 95. He coached football, basketball and baseball at the high school, where he also taught science and served as athletic director. He later served eight years as mayor of Coshocton and 22 years as the city’s first recreation director.
