Scammers impersonate Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office

Staff report

ZANESVILLE – The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a phone scam in which callers impersonate the office threatening arrest and demanding money.

The sheriff’s office received around five reports of the scam happening in Muskingum County, Sheriff Matt Lutz said.

In the scam, callers inform people that they failed to show up for grand jury and that a warrant is out for their arrest. The scammers threaten the person with jail if they don’t got to Wal-Mart and get $400 to pay the sheriff’s office, Lutz said.

The scammers have also recorded a phone message similar to the sheriff’s office, Lutz said.

“The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is not doing any kind of phone solicitation for warrants of any kind of money,” Lutz said.
