Optometrists celebrate 14 years at The Eye Site
GRANVILLE – Nancy Dietz got her first pair of glasses when she was 6 years old.
And from that moment on, she dreamed of one day becoming an optometrist. Her doctor was always so friendly and helpful, and it inspired her.
Today she works as an optometrist alongside her husband and fellow optometrist, Brett Dietz, at their practice The Eye Site in Granville.
"I always knew I wanted to do it. My mother was a nurse and I always watched her helping people, and I wanted to do something that would help people too," Nancy said.
The couple met while attending Miami University. Nancy was already on her way to becoming an optometrist, but Brett was actually earning a degree in zoology and environmental science. After graduating he spent about four years working in that field, but he couldn't help but notice how happy Nancy was in optometry.
So he decided to switch gears and go back to school to get his doctoral degree, where he found that he shared his wife's passion for optometry. While he finished graduate school at Ohio State, Nancy worked in eye care offices in the Columbus area.
After a few years working in the field, the Dietzs started thinking about opening their own practice. The couple was on their way to moving to Newark when they heard that Dr. Shay, who owned The Eye Site, was looking for someone to take over his practice so he could retire.
In a matter of a few weeks, they had their first child, moved to Newark and bought the business from Shay. It was a crazy time, Nancy said, but it all worked out and the two couldn't be happier. This year the Dietzs are celebrating their 14th year as owners of The Eye Site.
The business also has a location in Millersport, where Brett practices three days per week while Nancy takes the lead at the Granville office.
One of the things they are proud of in their practice is maintaining relationships with their clients. Nancy and Brett do all of the testing for their patients, and go so far as to help them file their insurance claims and resolving any issues that arise.
"We have a great patient base here, and that's what has made it so enjoyable. Both the Newark and the Granville communities are great," Brett said. "I can't imagine doing anything else."
Neither can Nancy.
"Working with patients who are having trouble seeing, and then getting them glasses and all of a sudden they can see well, it's so rewarding," Nancy said.
