Denise Warner expands hair salon to Granville

GRANVILLE – Denise Warner's first introduction into the hair styling business was as a pretend model for her friend's aunt, who always wanted to try out new styles and needed someone to practice on.

Warner always loved it and quickly began trying to style hair for all of her neighborhood friends, and even sometimes their pets. When she got older, she enrolled in the cosmetology program at the Career and Technical Education Centers of Licking County and jumped right into a salon when she graduated.

After about eight years she decided to go out on her own. She took a leap of faith, found a great location and opened her first salon, Denise's Family Hair Care, in Hebron.

It was a little scary at first, but things couldn't have worked out better, Warner said, especially considering she is now expanding her business to a second location in Granville. Denise's Salon on South Main will celebrate its grand opening from 3 to 6 p.m. May 31.

"It really is a dream come true," Warner said. "I am very passionate about what I do and it's been such a blessing."

The new salon will be opening at 126 S. Main St., in Granville. Warner poured about $30,000 into renovating the building, including knocking down some walls and giving it a modern makeover.

Her inspiration for the new space was a modern New-York style salon studio, with hardwood floors and an open floor plan. There are still some decor decisions to be made, but so far Warner is loving her new space.

Denise's Salon on South Main offers cut, styling, color and chemical services. It also offers various hair treatments, such as a scalp treatment and hair smoothie (a concoction of Warner's own making), hair removal and makeup application.

Erin Marks, a stylist at the salon, said she can't wait to see what's in store for Denise's.

"I think it's going to be amazing. I can't wait to build my career here," Marks said. "I never really felt like myself until I started hair styling. It's a great way to be yourself and be creative and that's what I love about it."

At Warner's salon in Hebron, the styling booths are rented by each individual stylist, but the new location will have the whole staff working together as more of a team. Moving more toward a community inside the salon is one of the reasons she wanted to open a new location, and it's something she's really looking forward to.

Many of Warner's staff members call her a hummingbird because she's always flitting around from one thing to the next, keeping busy between managing the salons and working with clients.

She's definitely planning to keep working behind the chair in the new salon, and keep her head filled with ideas for the future.

"My vision is to continue growing. My mind has not stopped since I started, but for now I'm just taking it one day at a time," Warner said.
