County plans Memorial Day services

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Veterans Service Commission has six Memorial Day services planned for Coshocton County.

The 134th annual Keene parade and services will start at 9:30 a.m. May 29 at the Keene United Methodist Church. Featured speakers are Doris and Terry Casey, U.S. Army World War II veterans. Keene Methodist Youth Fellowship will serve lunch from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The parade will begin at noon with Grand Marshall Lister Endsley, the county's oldest World War II veteran, the Walhonding Rube Band and the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office. Warsaw American Legion Post 634 will give a 21-gun salute at the Veterans' Monument.

Armed forces will be honored at a ceremony at 2 p.m. May 29 at the Plainfield Cemetery. The speaker will be Coshocton County Community Choir Director Charles Snyder. The Ridgewood High School Band and Plainfield United Methodist Church Choir will provide music. Community members will read the GAR Rituals from the Book of Service and provide veterans recognition. The Coshocton County Veterans Council Honor Guard will also participate. Events will be in the church, if the weather is bad.

Services in Blissfield will begin at 2 p.m. May 29 at Blissfield Cemetery. Speaker will be Woody Wilson, retired U.S. Army Military Police Sgt. First Class. Killbuck VFW Post 7079 will conduct graveside services for Eugene Victor Miller. The Walhonding Valley Rube Band will play. Services will be at Blissfield United Methodist Church, if the weather is bad.

The annual Coshocton parade and services will start at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade will start at the corner of Main and Eighth streets and will go down Main Street to services at the courtsquare. Speakers will be Voice of Democracy essay winner Sarah Kittner, Betty Rochester of Blue Star Mothers and Gary Baker, son of former World War II prisoner of war Lewis “Ed” Baker. A tribute will honor veterans who have died since last Memorial Day and the honor guard will perform military services.

The Walhonding Valley-Warsaw parade and services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday with the parade starting on Railroad Street and ending at Valley View Cemetery. Speakers will be Voice of Democracy essay contest winner Sarah Kittner and G.W. Griffis, Marine Corps Korean War veteran. The Walhonding Rube Band will also play.

Community members will read names of area veterans listed on the memorial wall during a service at 6 p.m. Monday at the Conesville Park.
