Holiday, graduations fare can be found at Fresno Market

Julia Brown

Who do you get in touch with to order a pretty day of sunshine? Mother Nature and the weather forecasters just can’t seem to get it in gear.

But with this weekend being area graduations and Memorial Day, I’m certain the sun will shine on all events and the Fresno Farmers Market.

Again, it rained for the market last Saturday, but that didn’t deter the vendors or our die-hard customers. Shoppers and vendors stayed dry and warm in the Dave Warren Township Building while enjoying bowls of hot chili and hot dogs, compliments of Bertha Stutzman and the Fresno Methodist Church.

With this weekend being the official kick-off to a much-awaited summer, rest assured the vendors will have everything you need for the perfect Memorial Day picnic or gradutation celebration.

But, first I thought it would be appropriate to give a little history on how and why we celebrate Memorial Day. As most everyone already knows, Memorial Day honors the brave men and women who died while serving our country.

However, did you know that the first Memorial Day may have been conducted by freed salves during the Civil War in honor of those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom? On May 1, 1865, freed slaves gathered in the cover of darkness and laid flowers on the graves of Union soldiers, marking the first Decoration Day.

May we all take a lesson from this, as we take time to remember this important holiday.

The Fresno Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday, rain or shine, in the heart of downtown Fresno. For more information, suggestions or concerns, call 740-545-0849 anytime.

Recipe and information from Julia Brown, of the Fresno Farmers Market.

Here is an excellent recipe to try to incorporate some of those much anticipated strawberries from Southern Living magazine.

Strawberry Bruschetta

•11/2 cups fresh sliced strawberries

1/2 cup mandarin oranges diced

•1 cup grape tomatoes quartered

•3 tablespoons fresh chopped basil

•1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

•1 tablespoon local golden honey

•salt and pepper to taste

•10 ounces goat cheese or feta cheese

•1 loaf French baguette

Cut baguette in to 1-inch slices and spread with cheese. Place on cookie sheet and place in a 350 degree oven for about 12 minutes or until warmed through and toasted. Mix all other ingredients together, place heaping spoonful atop each warmed baguette, slice and serve immediately.
