WASHINGTON, D.C. - Parker Inks of Fremont was honored for outstanding volunteer service during the 21st annual presentation of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Battling muscular dystrophy, Inks started a foundation eight years ago and has generated $150,000 during an annual dinner and auction to help families burdened by the high costs of caring for children with disabilities.

Inks, 17, a junior at Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic, received a $1,000 award along with 100 other top youth volunteers in the country.

Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank payed tribute to Inks and other award winners during the gala dinner at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
