Avoid being a victim of theft this holiday season

NEWARK - With the holiday shopping season's official kickoff only a few days away, the Newark Division of Police is offering tips to avoid becoming a victim of theft.

Sgt. Bert Gliatta said there is generally a slight uptick in the number of thefts reported during the holiday shopping season.

To avoid becoming a victim, here are some suggestions:

Make packages as invisible as possible while out shopping.

If you are going store to store, Gliatta suggested putting shopping bags into the trunk before leaving for your next destination, as potential thieves may be watching if you hide bags before entering a new store.

If you're carrying a purse, hold it close to your body.

Gliatta said purse snatchers are going to be looking for opportunities. A purse being carried by the straps close to the ground is an easier target than one being held on the shoulder, close to the body.

Gliatta also said carrying a purse versus leaving it in a cart is ideal to avoid becoming a target.

Don't be distracted in parking lots.

When walking to your car, Gliatta suggested having car keys in hand and avoid talking on or using a cellphone. Potential thieves could see you as an easier target if you aren't paying attention to your surroundings.

If ordering gifts online, be aware of delivery options.

Gliatta said there have been several reports of packages being stolen from porches so far this year. He suggested having a neighbor or friend sign for a package if no one will be home at its expected delivery time.

Taking advantage of shipping to stores, when available, also is a good way to avoid having a package potentially sitting on a porch. While it may be less convenient, Gliatta said it may be a better option if you won't be home during the delivery time.

Having online orders delivered to a workplace or the address of a neighbor, relative or friend who would be able to be home also are options.

Gliatta said contacting shipping companies and asking for packages to be placed in less visible locations, such as inside a garage door or behind a plant on a porch, also can reduce the risk of having property stolen.

"You want to limit the visibility, especially in daylight hours," Gliatta said.

If you are a victim of crime, report it to police.

If you become a victim of crime this holiday season, report it to law enforcement. Police officers can step up patrols in areas where reports have been made if they are aware. Also, if a crime is reported, there is a chance the person responsible could be caught.
