NEW CONCORD - Matt Weir wanted to make his college decision before the season starts Friday night.

The John Glenn senior accomplished it Monday, announcing his official commitment to play basketball for the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Although he did not sign his letter of intent, Weir has no plans of wavering on his decision, he said.

Weir also considered the U.S. Navy and Division II West Liberty before choosing the Falcons, who last made the NCAA tournament in 2006.

They were 14-17 last season and compete in the Mountain West Conference. Head coach Dave Pilipovich is entering his fourth year and has Air Force off to a 3-1 start.

"I'm excited about joining a program that fits me," he said. "Playing Division I is something I've been preparing for my whole life. I felt like I've worked hard to earn this opportunity, and I'm looking forward to serving my country and receiving a quality education."

Weir, who is undecided, sees a program headed in the right direction. It was one of things that enticed him about heading to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

"I liked what they were about," he said. "I know it will prepare me for the future, and they are going in the right direction."

Weir is one of four senior starters back for the Muskies, who are coming off consecutive regional finals appearances. Now, he and his team can focus on reaching Columbus.

"I hate to lose, and that loss (to Walnut Ridge) left a bad taste in our mouths," he said. "We have a lot of experience, but we need to improve each day if we want to win a state title."
