BUCYRUS - Tuesday night was very pink. The Bucyrus volleyball team hosted Buckeye Central in the annual Volley for a Cure game in effort to raise money and awareness to breast cancer. Even with the Redmen taking a 3-0 loss, the lessons learned go far beyond volleyball.

“The girls love to do Volley for a Cure,” Bucyrus coach Allysen Coleman said. “They especially love to get the student body involved. A lot of the girls have been effected by breast cancer and other cancers with members of their families. So, they love to raise money and getting to recognize their family members.”

During pregame introductions, members of the Bucyrus volleyball team handed out flowers to honor those living with, beat and who have died because of breast cancer. There were also auctioned items in the commons area and many raffles. They also got the crowd involved with a serving contest where people could earn prizes by hitting t-shirts and towels on the court. There was also a “Prettiest in Pink Competition” after the second set. It was all on the team.

“I think is a great thing for them. These girls are a good group and they realize how big this is outside of just our team and the sport of volleyball,” Coleman added. “They did a lot with their baskets and bake sale and they really showed how great of people they are by raising money for the cause.”Throughout the evening it was announced that the Volley for a Cure event raised more than $500 towards breast cancer research.

Yet, there was still a volleyball game played. And as much as everyone else was seeing pink, the Buckettes were seeing red. Coming off of a huge victory over Carey on Monday, the Buckettes took care of business again on Tuesday downing the Redmen in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-15. The Buckettes are really starting to find a grove.

“The girls are putting forth that little bit of extra effort on every play,” Buckeye Central coach Jackie Reinhart said. “They are really talking to each other and have found a very nice chemistry together.”

A loss to Upper Sandusky last week really put a damper on the Buckettes Northern 10 Conference hopes, but they still took a valuable lesson from the match in which they competed with the Rams.

“It showed the girls that they are capable of playing with the best team in the conference,” Reinhart said. “It is just going out and stringing everything together.”

The Redmen had a game plan coming into the matchup, but it seemed to get lost. They also knew Buckeye Central was coming in with a lot of momentum from its Monday night win.

“We knew they were coming off of a great win over Carey last night,” Coleman said. “We knew what we had to do and just did not execute. We knew the places we had to pick on and we knew what we had to do in the front row we just did not execute what we planned on.”

Kelci Simms showed why she was the leader for the Redmen. She finished with seven kills, four serving points and four blocks. Shaina Orewiler also had seven kills and Torie Tanner chipped in with six kills and four serving points. The Redmen were only able to tally 15 serving points on the evening.

Sarah Heydinger had one of the best individual performances of the season for the Buckeye Central Buckettes. The junior had an astounding 15 blocks on the night, including three during one point in the final set. She also posted four serving points and seven kills.

“She gets after it,” Reinhart said of her front row specialist. “Sarah is one that is always going to be on the ball and she is one of the many kids we have that give 110 percent all of the time and we cannot ask for more than that.”

Super sophomore Jenna Karl had a great night hitting with 15 kills and six serving points. Jenna Delarber had 10 kills and five blocks for the Buckettes. Erin Baldosser had a great night from the serving line with 14 points including 10 in a row to begin the first set. Claire Songer had 10 serving points and Bailey Agin had eight.

The Buckettes improve to 14-4 and 10-3 in the N10 while Bucyrus drops to 5-13 and 3-10 in the N10.

The Buckettes will be back in action Thursday against Colonel Crawford and the Redmen travel to Carey the same evening.
