FREMONT - Police are still searching a man suspected of shooting a Fremont man at the Casa Nueva Apartments shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim, Jeffery Wiley, was taken to a Toledo-area hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, Wiley was still alive, but the severity of his injuries is unknown, according to Fremont police Chief Dean Bliss.

Two residents at the complex, which has nearly 50 units, said the shooting happened in one of the apartments near the front parking lot, by the office and mail slots.

Several residents who live nearby told The News-Messenger they did not hear any shots fired Wednesday night.

Bliss said detectives are still searching for the suspect, who is described as a short, younger-looking black male, between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5, weighing between 150 and 160 pounds, with no facial hair. The suspect was seen wearing a dark hoodie sweatshirt.

A motive has not been released in connection with the shooting.

"We are not sure who the shooter is. We've interviewed several people at Casa Nueva. Not sure what we have yet," Bliss said Thursday afternoon.

Wiley was arrested in May 2015 on drug-related charges and has a jury trial scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 14 in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court, where he faces one felony count each of aggravated possession of drugs, possession of heroin and aggravated trafficking of heroin, according to Sandusky County Prosecutor Tom Stierwalt.
