FREMONT – Construction is now underway on The Commons at Little Bark Creek, a new housing development that will offer more affordable rental housing options for area senior citizens.

Groundbreaking for the development took place July 20 at the construction site, behind Stricker Family Development Center, 765 S. Buchanan St., Fremont. Representatives of the various partner agencies, along with local elected officials and the WSOS board of directors, participated in the groundbreaking.

The development is a partnership of WSOS Community Action Commission and Herman & Kittle Properties as well as the Ohio Equity Fund from the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing.

The Commons at Little Bark Creek will be home to a three-story complex of 60 one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as three townhouse duplexes housing a total of six multigenerational, four-bedroom units. Each of the townhouse units includes a living area, kitchen, first- and second-floor bathrooms, laundry room, and three second-floor bedrooms as well as a first-floor bedroom suite with its own kitchenette, bathroom and living area.

The site will offer 66 units along with features such as a fitness center, conference room, a bark park for dogs, raised garden beds and more.

“Not only did we wish to provide solutions to the affordable housing needs of seniors in our community, we also wanted to meet the needs of the growing number of households that include multiple generations under one roof,” WSOS Housing Development Coordinator Don Corley said.

Construction on The Commons at Little Bark Creek development is expected to be completed in late spring of 2016.
