Zanesville man indicted on rape, kidnapping, abduction

ZANESVILLE - A grand jury has indicted a 31-year-old man on seven charges, including rape, abduction and two counts of kidnapping.

Donald A. Adams faces up to 50 years in prison on the charges, based on Ohio sentencing guidelines. The charges come after he was arrested on Feb. 6, according to the the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office .

Prosecutor Mike Haddox's office Wednesday brought the case in front of a grand jury, which returned an indictment containing two counts of kidnapping, a first-degree felony; one count of abduction, a third-degree felony; one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony; one count of possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony; and one count of rape, a first-degree felony.

Adams also was indicted on one count of domestic violence. According to court records, Adams has two previous misdemeanor domestic violence convictions on his record — one in county court in 2008 and the other in Zanesville Municipal Court in 2005 — making the new charge a third-degree felony under state law.

Adams, an inmate at the county jail, likely will appear next week in common pleas court for an arraignment, where he will enter a plea to the indictment. He also will have a chance to address his bond at the hearing.

Haddox said he was not able to provide details about the case while the case is pending in court.

Adams served a two-year prison sentence in 2012 after pleading guilty to a felonious assault charge. Judge Kelly Cottrill dismissed a domestic violence charge at his sentencing hearing, court records show.

The victim in that case had gone missing February 3, 2012, about a month after Adams was indicted on the two charges. The Zanesville Police Department called the search off when the woman's mother made contact with her over the phone, according to previous Times Recorder reports.

Adams also has numerous convictions out of both municipal and county court, including for assault, menacing and underage consumption.
