NEWARK— The death of a Denison University student has been ruled a suicide.

An autopsy on the body of 21-year-old Wendell Jackson was conducted Tuesday afternoon, hours after he was found in the Denison University Biological Reserve.

The Licking County Coroner's Office said Wednesday morning that Jackson's body was found hanging from a tree. He likely died sometime Monday morning or early afternoon.

A toxicology report will be completed, however, a spokesperson said enough information is available to officially rule Jackson's death a suicide.

Jackson was a junior at Denison University from the Chicago area. He was reported missing Monday afternoon after he did not attend any classes that day and friends said they had not heard from him since Sunday.

Jackson had last been seen in an academic building on campus around 5 or 6 p.m. Sunday.

University officials said Jackson was a bright and engaged student on campus, working as a resident assistant and admissions host for future students. About 700 students participated in efforts to locate Jackson on Monday.

In a statement on Denison's website, President Adam Weinberg said Jackson was a "remarkable person."

"He was both liked and admired by all who knew him," Weinberg wrote. "He was an important member of our community and will be missed."

A candelight vigil was held on campus Tuesday evening for staff and students. A memorial service is being planned for the campus community.
