Port Clinton opens with decisive win over Woodmore

The preseason buzz surrounding Port Clinton's football team centered on its offense.

And while there were some early fireworks, Redskins coach Beau Carmon was most pleased with his defense in a 63-0 nonconference shutout of Woodmore.

"It's a great feeling," Port Clinton's Corbin Winningham said. "Teamwork ... earning the 0 came as one team playing together and being supportive. Communication was the biggest factor. Talk and make plays from there."

The Redskins' Nathan Stubblefield returned a punt for a score, caught a touchdown and intercepted a pass in the first half.

"Nathan is a key player," Winningham said. "He makes the plays whenever we need them. It takes pressure off the defense, but we still made plays. He's one of the most versatile players I've ever seen."

Winningham had two sacks in the first quarter and Woodmore didn't have a first down its first seven possessions.

"Our blocking all over the field and our defensive three-and-outs," Stubblefield said of the early onslaught. "We started off hot and our players fed off each other."

Aidan Rospert caught a touchdown while Emerson Lowe rushed for two as the Redskins led 49-0 at the half. Brandon Moore and backup quarterback Joey Brenner added scoring runs.

Lowe ran for 165 yards on eight carries and Moore completed each of his five passes as Port Clinton’s starters at the skill positions were out after Stubblefield’s pick early in the second quarter. The Redskins didn't take long to demonstrate they can hurt opponents in a balanced fashion.

"It's such a key," Stubblefield said. "No one can scheme just pass or run. They have to scheme for both."

Woodmore threatened as it drove from its own 18 to Port Clinton's 7 late in the first half. Connor Bringman rushed for 35 yards and completed four passes during the possession before time in the second quarter ran out.

"They're a better team," Wildcats coach Brian Spicer said. "Every aspect of the game, they were better. Sometimes you just don't match up. We're out there fighting. We missed some tackles and that hurts. Our kids battled. We have work to do."

Brenner added a touchdown run in the third quarter while Stone York returned an interception for a score in the fourth.
