ZANESVILLE - A Zanesville man has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the death of a Crooksville woman at her home.

Joseph S. Bryant

Joseph S. Bryant, 46, 216 Eastwood Drive, Zanesville, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, on Monday in Perry County Common Pleas Court. He faced a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison.

Bryant was suspected in the death of 26-year-old Kayla Calendine, of Crooksville. Calendine was found unconscious and covered in bruises in March at her home at 425 Washington St. in Crooksville, officials reported; she later died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

Authorities previously told the Times Recorder that Bryant lived in the home with Calendine and two others.

An autopsy report indicated Calendine suffered blunt force trauma to the head, neck and torso. She also suffered a fractured sternum and lacerated spleen.

Bryant is being held at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville, where he has been since his indictment in June.
