Memorial Day events announced

ZANESVILLE - Several events and ceremonies are planned to observe Memorial Day in the area. Services submitted to the Times Recorder include:

•The Roseville American Legion Post 71 will conduct services at four cemeteries starting at 8:45 a.m. Monday. A parade will be at 11 a.m. from Main Street to Patriot Park with a program following. Guest speaker will be Col. Paul Pride, commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

•The Walter S. Kildow Detachment of the Marine Corps League of Zanesville will have a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery. Speaker is Marine Major Shawn Meier, commanding officer of the recruiting station in Cleveland. The Zanesville High School band will play. The Rev. Justin Williams of Coburn United Methodist Church will give the invocation and benediction. Names of deceased veterans will be read and VFW Post 1058 will provide a firing squad and play Taps.

•A community Memorial Day service will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Zion Christian Union Church in Portersville. Guest speakers are World War II veteran Gaylord Ketcham and veteran Bryce Clutter.

•The annual Thornville Memorial Day parade will be at 10 a.m. Monday starting at Thornville Elementary School, going to the 20th Century Monument and ending at the Lutheran Reformed Cemetery. Reading of locally deceased named on the monument will be done and the AmVets Honor Guard will give a rifle salute. The parade will feature the Sheridan High School Band, American Legion members and service vehicles among other entries.

•American Legion National Trail Post 756 of Hopewell will conduct services at several local cemeteries Sunday for Memorial Day. Services will be at 11:15 a.m. at Mount Sterling, 11:30 a.m. at Hopwell, 11:45 a.m. at Brownsville, noon at Poplar Forks, 12:30 p.m. at Mount Olive and 12:45 p.m. at Beulah.
