CRESTLINE – If there is one player that knows how long a high school basketball season is it is Wynford Royal Tyler Glowaski.

The junior began the season at the junior varsity level. On Friday, he was the savior the Royals needed. As Wynford limped into the fourth quarter against Crestline, Glowaski took over. His nine points in the closing quarter, 11 for the game, helped the Royals overcome a slow three quarters and take a 65-50 win.

“Tyler has worked hard all season and is very coachable,” Wynford coach Jason Engel said. “He will do whatever you ask him to do and kids like that are hard to come by. He will do the little things and he knows his role. Tonight it was making the extra pass and knocking down his shot.”

Heading into halftime scoreless and his team trailing 32-30, Glowaski hit a couple of free throws in the third but drilled an important 3-pointer to cap off a Royals 8-0 run to begin the fourth. It was just the type of performance he needed.

“I was just motivated and we came into the half with a bit of momentum built from Alex Crall and Braxton Tea and in the second half I just took advantage of opportunities that were given to me,” Glowaski said. “It is a big confidence booster for me. I am a role player and I get the ball to the shooters but tonight my performance gave to the motivation to continue to get better.”

But it was not all fun and games for the Royals. Crestline (1-17) came out with a lot of energy and built a 17-15 lead after the first and a 32-30 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs trailed just 45-42 heading into the fourth. But eight points in the fourth quarter proved to be too much to overcome and the young group dropped a heartbreaker.

“It was the youth coming out of us in the fourth tonight,” Crestline coach Rob Lisle said. “But I told them I am as proud as can be of their effort tonight. That was some of the best basketball we have played and we are really starting to pick up our game at the right moment. We will just need to piece it all together.”

The Bulldogs forced 10 first half turnovers and 21 for the game. Their defensive effort was the difference maker. But their offense was not overlooked. They shot 13 for 20 in the first half.

“Early on, we were not ready to play and were unfocused,” Engel said. “We couldn’t have started worse. But credit to Crestline. They really played hard. If you were to tell me they only had one win, I would be very shocked because they are well coached and played well.”

The Royals put up 20 points in the fourth quarter behind Glowaski’s nine. Wynford found a group that found a groove offensively and defensively.

“The effort was there in the fourth and we brought in some different guys and went with some different lineups,” Engel added. “We got a group of five that was really clicking. We have the luxury of having more depth this late I the season.”

Wynford senior Alex Crall produced game high scoring honors with 18 points including 4 of 8 from the 3-point line. Nate Sparks chipped in with a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 boards. Braxton Tea dropped 13 and Glowaski’s 11 gave the Royals four players in double figures.

The Bulldogs were led by Zach Gregory’s 14 points six rebounds. Tyler Sipes added 10 for Crestline and the highlight of the night came off of a Davon Triplett steal and breakaway one-handed jam. The Bulldogs will travel to Mansfield St. Peter’s on Saturday.

Wynford improves to 11-6 and will travel to Seneca East on Saturday as well.
