Don’t fall for debit card scam, sheriff says

Gazette staff

CHILLICOTHE – The Ross County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents about a debit card scam in the area.

In the scam, a person calls the card holder and tells them their card has been deactivated. To restore service, the card holder is told they need to press one on their phone and, after they do this, they are transferred to a live operator who asks for the card and personal identification numbers to reactivate the card.

Dave Weber, of the sheriff’s office, says banks are not the ones making the calls. If you give the information, you are giving scammers access to your bank account.

If you feel that you have been scammed, call the sheriff’s office at (740) 773-1185.
