Dick Martin: Take caution when fueling boats

Dick Martin

Summer is a busy time for Buckeye boaters who are already crisscrossing Ohio's lakes seeking fish or just fun. But the sport can be less than fun if boaters use the wrong fuel. Boat Owners of America (BoatUS) is urging all boaters to be vigilant when filling up a boat being transferred on a trailer at a gas station to ensure they do not accidentally mis-fuel with ethanol gasoline at greater than 10 percent alcohol or E10. Readers who would like to know more about the dangers of too much ethanol in a boat's gas tank are invited to watch a short video on the subject. It's available at https://goo.glD1hW38.

Walleye fishing report

Fishing for anglers who like to visit Lake Erie continues good with walleye being caught around "A" can on the Camp Perry firing range, around reefs from Niagara to Touissant, between Green Island and Rattlesnake Island, and north of the Marblehead lighthouse. Further east fishing has been good near shore west of Huron (Sawmill Creek), off Cleveland in 37 to 42 feet of water, and from Geneva to Conneaut in 35 to 50 feet of water. Top offerings are deep diving Reef Runners, spoons behind divers, and worm harnesses with inline weights or bottom bouncers. Yellow perch are biting east of Kelleys Island, off the Marblehead lighthouse, just off the breakwall at Lorain, and in 50 to 60 feet of water off Cleveland.

Don't mix bird feed, use two feeders

Readers who like to feed birds year around, but want to do so inexpensively can take a lesson from one reader. In an email he said "Like you, I tried mixing cheaper seed with my sunflower seed. However I was seeing so much wasted red millet on the ground that I went back to straight sunflower seed. The birds were scratching the millet out to get to the sunflower seed. I started putting the cheaper mix in a separate feeder beside the sunflower

seed feeder. That is working much better.
