HS Roundup: West M’s Holbert throws perfect game against Ceramics

CROOKSVILLE - Winning pitcher Shane Holbert tossed a perfect game with three strikeouts, as West Muskingum shut out Crooksville 2-0 in Muskingum Valley League baseball Thursday.

The game was supposed to be played at West before being moved to Crooksville due to field conditions.

There was no score until the fifth inning. Drew Mirgon laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Alex Lynch scored on the ensuing error for the Tornadoes (11-11, 6-8), while they added another run in the sixth on Holbert’s RBI double.

Lynch, Tristan Head and Nick Hart also had singles in the win.

Landon Hinkle allowed four hits, struck out two and walked one in the complete game loss for Crooksville (5-14, 5-10).

The Ceramics had a hit in the second inning, but the hitter batted out of order and was out by rule.

River View 4, Rosecrans 0: Winning pitcher Jonathan Helmick threw a three-hitter and struck out six, as the Black Bears picked up an East Central Ohio League win over the host Bishops at Gant Stadium.

Helmick and Josh Bigrigg had two hits each for the Black Bears, who scored a run in the second and three in the third. Bigrigg, Bryar Cox and Trevor Wine all knocked in runs

Evan Lynch started and had three strikeouts in two innings to suffer the loss for the Bishops (9-9). Travis Johnston, Aaron Gehlken and Michael Fisher also pitched.

Rosecrans host Tuscarawas Central Catholic at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gant to open up the Division IV tournament.

Zanesville 6, Newark 3: The Blue Devils (14-9) plated three runs in the first inning and made the most of four hits to earn a non-league road win.

Darrick Gibbons scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to earn the complete game victory.

Jared Ball collected two RBIs, Braxton Snyder had a single and scored three runs and Caden Mumaw, Jackson Wright and Brandon Pritchard all singled with a RBI for Zanesville.

Chase Richardson had three hits and scored twice and Brandon Hunt added two hits for the Wildcats (11-12). Jesse Holmes allowed five runs on four hits and walked three in six-plus innings to suffer the loss.

Zanesville heads to Plain City Jonathan Alder at 5 p.m. Friday.
