Lima police Sgt. Jason Warren tells The Lima News that the boy, whose identity wasn’t immediately available, had been walking in shallow water Sunday in the Ottawa River with other children. He was swept away by the current when he walked out too far.

Officials say Greg Stevenson jumped into the water — estimated at about 40 degrees at the time — to rescue the boy. City firefighters pulled him out further downstream.

Stevenson was taken to a hospital and has been pronounced dead.

Officials say a police officer jumped into the water and rescued the boy.

The boy has also been hospitalized. Officials say he wasn’t seriously hurt.
