Jerig set for first pro boxing match

Staff report

ZANESVILLE – Travis Jerig has been in amateur boxing since he was 10-years-old, but he recently signed a contract to join the professional ranks.

His first pro bout will be Saturday, April 25, in Parkersburg, W. Va. after more than 100 amateur bouts, which have set the foundation for an explosive entry into the sport he has loved.

Most find the sport of boxing too difficult in degree of necessary training, dedication, sacrifices and overall preparation. Since it is subjectively scored as opposed to objective-type scoring, boxing lends itself to a lot of criticism with many misguided or undeserved wins and losses.

The reality is all of the different factors involved with scoring and judging makes boxing the most challenging and intriguing of all sports. Proof is the upcoming Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao battle coming up on May 2 that promises to be one of the most watched and highest grossing sports events of all time.

Jerig, who fought for Zanesville PAL, will compete with his long-time amateur coach Tim Hartmeyer in his corner to begin building himself in the sport.

At 19 years of age, he has the time, but he’s already proved he has the dedication. Now, all he needs is the opportunities to see his long-time dreams come true.

“Hopefully, soon I will sign with a promoter that can help build me to a title shot,” Jerig said.

Jerig’s fight will be at the Parkersburg High Field House, located at 2101 Dudley Avenue in Parkersburg. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and fights begin at 7:30 p.m.
